Chapter 4
Sweet Egg with Fresh Milk
It's been almost a week since Phapfun moved into the territory of the young Alpha, Zhang Chengyi. Despite Zhang Chengyi's promise to bring a doctor to check on him, he had gone silent. It seemed that Zhang Chengyi was so busy that even though they lived under the same roof, they only saw each other in the mornings. Phapfun had a habit of getting up early to help his aunt make pastries for sale, while Zhang Chengyi had to leave for the company early, allowing them to see each other every morning. However, after that, they didn't talk at all.
Phapfun took a bite of the milk cake, his cheeks puffed out as he chewed, and glanced at the clock to see it was past nine o'clock. He couldn't help but think that after just a week here, he felt like he had gained weight and was starting to feel heavy. The butler took care of his meals, coming to cook for him every morning, noon, and evening. Phapfun had become familiar enough to chat casually with him.
His daily routine consisted of eating and sleeping, alternating between the two. Fortunately, even though his mobile phone was an old model, he could still call his aunt and sister to ease his loneliness. Phapfun had just noticed that this luxurious condo lacked the giant TV screens he'd seen in dramas, which was quite disappointing for someone who loved movies and TV shows.
"Mr. Zhang is late again..." he muttered.
Phapfun admitted that he was fighting off sleep just to wait for the homeowner. Over the past few days, he had started to worry about carrying a child for the Zhang Family. Initially, he thought that since his employer wasn't in a rush, he didn't need to be either. But as time went on, his anxiety grew.
Phapfun continued to wait for the homeowner until nearly ten o'clock. When he couldn't hold out any longer, he took the cake box to the trash and got ready for bed. Despite his worries, he soon drifted off to sleep.
Who would have thought that not long after Phapfun went to bed, the tall figure of Alpha Zhang, Zhang Chengyi, appeared in the luxurious condo. He scanned the room for the source of the fresh milk scent that lingered throughout the spacious room. But when he found no one, he simply sighed. He took a shower, dressed, and went to bed, exhausted from work. Everything here was starting to fall into place, and soon he would be flying back to China to continue his role as the next leader of the family.
But at around two in the morning, Zhang Chengyi got out of his comfortable bed, feeling strangely hungry. It wasn't savory food he craved, but sweets instead.
"There's nothing."
Zhang Chengyi's sharp eyebrows furrowed when he saw the empty refrigerator, devoid of any sweets. As mentioned before, Zhang Chengyi was obsessed with sweets, so the butler always had to stock the fridge with them for him. But this time, there were none. He intended to reprimand his personal butler tomorrow, but the familiar scent of milk wafting closer made him abandon the thought and turn to look.
The newcomer flinched when he saw Zhang Chengyi turn to look at him. Chengyi examined the pale figure dressed in an oversized old t-shirt and slightly newer elastic pants, and he couldn't help but shake his head. There was nothing attractive about it at all. Yet, he had to admit that when worn by Phapfun, it looked strangely cute.
Phapfun had woken up due to the pressure emanating from Zhang Chengyi. In his frustration, Zhang Chengyi had completely forgotten there was an Omega under the same roof, inadvertently releasing his pressure without restraint. Despite his fear, Phapfun was curious about the source of the scent, so he decided to investigate, only to find the tall figure bending and straightening in front of the refrigerator.
"Are you still awake?" Zhang Chengyi asked.
Phapfun lowered his gaze to the floor, feeling scared. Strangely, the pressure from the other had diminished significantly, leaving only a faint trace. His slender fingers moved to point at the questioner, hesitantly.
"Your scent..."
Zhang Chengyi immediately understood. He sighed, trying to suppress his irritation from craving sweets before asking about the dessert he had seen earlier that morning. "Did you see the fresh milk cake in the fridge?"
Phapfun froze, though his heart was racing. From Zhang Chengyi's demeanor, it was clear this wasn't going to end well. He hadn't intended to steal, but hadn't the butler or even Zhang Chengyi himself said he could eat anything in the fridge? Despite his anxiety about the consequences, Phapfun had to confess.
"I ate it myself. I'm sorry."
He admitted he was so frustrated he wanted to devour the source of the sweet milk scent instead of the missing dessert. But when he saw Phapfun raise his hands in a respectful wai, looking genuinely remorseful, he couldn't stay angry. Chengyi placed his palm over the hands held together in a lotus bud gesture to signal him to lower them. Wasn't this too much like an adult bullying a child?
"Never mind," the Alpha homeowner dismissed with a sigh. "I just wanted something sweet."
"Do you really want it that much, Mr. Zhang?" Seeing him try to control his irritation so his scent wouldn't harm him, Phapfun felt even more guilty and asked.
"I'm addicted to sweets," Chengyi admitted frankly.
"I can make some desserts, but I'm not sure if you'll like them." His long fingers scratched his cheek in embarrassment. If the other party rejected him, he'd be mortified.
"Do we have anything to make desserts with?"
Fortunately, Zhang Chengyi didn't press the issue further. Instead, he stepped aside, as if inviting Phapfun to search for ingredients to make a sweet treat. Upon seeing the contents of the fridge, Phapfun almost sighed. He shouldn't have boasted so confidently, because the fridge only contained milk, meat, and fresh vegetables.
For some reason, Phapfun felt Zhang Chengyi's words and gaze were challenging him. Feeling the challenge, he sighed before taking out the milk and eggs. Phapfun poured the milk into a pot and turned on the gas stove to a low flame. He turned to ask the man who was watching him with interest.
"Sweet milk or plain milk?"
"Plain milk," Chengyi replied.
Though he had a sweet tooth, Chengyi felt that plain milk had a more fragrant aroma than sweetened or flavored milk. Maybe it was just his imagination, but the aroma certainly enhanced the taste.
With the milk's flavor decided, Phapfun added sugar and stirred it with a ladle until it dissolved. Once it began to boil, he cracked the eggs into the pot.
"How many eggs?"
"Three... no… four."
"Two will do. It's late."
Zhang Chengyi frowned, surprised that Phapfun dared to defy him. Honestly, aside from his father, who else would dare to go against Zhang Chengyi? Even his mother, when she was alive, never dared to cross him. However, seeing Phapfun's determination to make something for him, his anger dissipated. He decided to consider it as the omega with the fresh milk scent being concerned for him.
The sweet aroma and taste of the dessert, which he was trying for the first time, pleased Zhang Chengyi greatly. Phapfun smiled when he saw the other man finish the bowl without leaving a single drop of milk. The young alpha openly praised the cook, earning a sweet smile in return.
"Make it again sometime."
Phapfun nodded with a smile, then asked curiously when he saw Zhang Chengyi pick up his iPad. The laughter and unfamiliar language caught his interest. As mentioned, Phapfun was someone who loved movies and dramas, a habit formed from watching them with his aunt since childhood.
"Mr. Zhang... what are you watching?"
"A Chinese comedy show," Chengyi replied casually, glancing at the screen showing a famous comedy program from the country he grew up in. However, the focused gaze made him look up.
Phapfun sat upright, his eyes fixed with interest. Even though he was seated across from Zhang Chengyi, his eagerness suggested he wanted to watch too. Chengyi was surprised before realizing that his condo didn't have a TV. He was a modern man who preferred his phone over television, and he assumed Phapfun was the same. But seeing the other's demeanor made him reconsider.
"Do you want to watch?"
"I can't understand it, but it looks fun."
Zhang Chengyi pondered for a moment, unsure if asking would be insulting to the person in front of him.
"Do you... know how to use it?"
Phapfun was certain that the "it" Zhang Chengyi referred to was the device in his hand. He nodded without hesitation. Although he had never owned one, Phapfun knew how to use such gadgets. At the very least, his education had covered these things. He didn't want to boast, but people often said he was smart. Yet, Phapfun was surprised when the man in front of him handed him the iPad.
"I'll lend it to you."
"Really?"
Chengyi almost laughed when he saw Phapfun's eyes light up. He looked at the young omega, nine years his junior, with quiet fondness. You really can be happy over something this simple, huh, Phapfun? The one being silently teased cradled the device—larger than a mobile phone—in his arms with extreme care, as if afraid it might get scratched. Phapfun was thrilled at the prospect of catching up on the drama he'd missed since staying with Zhang Chengyi. But the words from the man sitting across from him dashed his hopes abruptly.
"It's three in the morning, Phapfun... You should get some sleep tonight. The doctor will be coming to check your health tomorrow," Chengyi reminded him. He had been rushing to finish work so he could be there when the doctor came to examine the future mother of his child. Seeing Phapfun's face fall, he felt a pang of sympathy. "You can borrow it for the whole week, no need to return it quickly."
"Goodnight, Mr. Zhang."
Phapfun said with a joyful smile, which made Zhang Chengyi pause as he was about to head to his bedroom. He had heard "goodnight" in many languages, but it had been a long time since he felt sincerity from the speaker...
Ever since his mother passed away...
"Goodnight, Phapfun."
Warmth from a gentle hand rested on the round head, causing Phapfun to pause just as Zhang Chengyi walked away. Only then did his fair face break into a wide, contented smile, clutching the item he'd been lent tightly. Beneath that stern and fierce demeanor...
Mr. Zhang was truly kind-hearted.
That morning, Phapfun woke up with a bright face, but the health check had to be postponed until the afternoon due to the sweet egg and milk dish. Zhang Chengyi was so flustered that he forgot he needed to be checked too. Luckily, they hadn't had breakfast yet.
Phapfun sat tensely on the soft seat, with Zhang Chengyi in an unusual casual outfit not far away. A skilled middle-aged doctor with a dignified demeanor had been invited from a renowned hospital, accompanied by two nurses in full uniform. The three of them helped examine both him and Zhang Chengyi, including blood tests. The service was so excellent that Phapfun almost forgot the days of waiting in line to see a doctor as a child. Having money really was wonderful, he thought, feeling a twinge of envy for the little one he was carrying.
"What’s got you in such a good mood?" Chengyi asked the person who had inadvertently smiled. Initially, he was worried Phapfun might be afraid of needles, but fortunately, the other seemed not to fear much at all.
“I’m not,” Phapfun shook his head with a smile. Just thinking about the little one who would come from his own body made him feel happy, yet strangely apprehensive.
Moreover, Phapfun had just learned that blood tests didn't take long. The middle-aged doctor, who seemed kind-hearted, smiled when he saw the results of the health check for the couple wishing to have a child. Of course, Zhang Chengyi hadn’t mentioned the surrogacy to the doctor; he had only asked for a health check. In reality, the Zhang Family already had their own family doctor, and as soon as Zhang Chengyi was ready to have a child, they were prepared to fly over immediately.
“The health and blood results for both Mr. Zhang and Mr. Phapfun are perfectly normal. Are you sure you want to use medical methods?” the doctor asked. “Honestly, your bodies are in excellent condition. If possible, I’d recommend trying the natural way a bit more.”
The knowledgeable doctor looked down at the test results in his hand with furrowed brows. The couple’s bodies didn’t seem to have any issues with conceiving naturally. However, the one with the healthy body looked at the other silently. Phapfun blushed deeply upon hearing the suggestion to try the natural way. He prayed that Zhang Chengyi would refuse or say something instead of just staring at him like he was doing now.
Even though Phapfun had never been in love, he wasn't so naive as to not know how having a child naturally works…
