Chapter 10

Chen Linyao paused her absurd thoughts and tilted her head back to stare at the cliff above.

That’s insane.

The height she had fallen from was truly unbelievable. At first, she thought she must have been mistaken, but after looking up again, she realized it really was that high.

“How did you do that?” Chen Linyao looked at Xie Zhengjie’s face before asking.

“Our cultivation level may have decreased, but a height like that isn’t an issue.”

The young woman paused for a moment, her gaze shifting between the towering cliff and the young man’s face, before hesitantly voicing something even she found hard to believe. “Are you saying it’s because of that immortal art thing you mentioned?”

The ability to produce fire from his hands could still be rationalized as sleight of hand or a magic trick. But for someone to leap off a cliff while carrying another person and land safely—this defied the limits of human capability.

“Something like that,” Xie Zhengjie replied dismissively.

The young man didn’t bother explaining that this was just a minor aspect of his physical training. In his kingdom, the art of cultivation was highly advanced, with numerous disciplines and practices. Jumping up and down cliffs like this didn’t even require advanced techniques—basic body-strengthening techniques sufficed.

“Are you serious?”

“Why would I bother lying to you?”

“Fair enough,” Chen Linyao admitted after a moment of thought. He had no apparent reason to deceive her, but the sheer absurdity of it all made her want to see it again with her own eyes.

“Can you show me again?”

Chen Linyao wanted to watch Xie Zhengjie leap back up the cliff to understand just how incredible his immortal art was. Xie Zhengjie gave her an annoyed look but sighed and said,

“Fine.”

The young man agreed, but Chen Linyao hadn’t expected her explanation to be so unclear. What she truly wanted was to stand below and watch him ascend from the ground. Instead, the young man scooped her up in a princess carry again, and it became immediately apparent that there was a problem.

Before she could explain, Xie Zhengjie had already stepped onto the cliffside and leapt upward three times. The rapid ascent left her no chance to shout, afraid that distracting him might throw off his rhythm. If they fell this time, her body would be in no condition for an open-casket funeral.

After holding her breath for what felt like an eternity, the young woman began to adjust. Despite the dizzying height, Xie Zhengjie’s every leap felt solid and controlled. Strangely, the sensation of soaring through the air wasn’t so bad.

When they finally reached the top, Chen Linyao exhaled in relief. Just as she was about to climb out of his arms, the young man spoke.

“You’re quite an odd one. A moment ago, you were screaming your lungs out, but now it seems you’re eager to try falling off the cliff again.”

Chen Linyao’s eye twitched. While she had asked him to demonstrate, she had never intended to experience it herself.

Before she could explain, Xie Zhengjie turned to face the cliff again. Without warning, he released her, letting her fall.

Stunned, Chen Linyao couldn’t even get the words Wait a second out before gravity yanked her down toward the ground below.

This time, she didn’t close her eyes like before. Instead, she watched as Xie Zhengjie descended even faster than before. He caught her in the same princess carry and used the cliff’s ledges to slow their speed.

The sensation of falling was far more nerve-wracking than the ascent.

Next time... There wouldn’t be a next time. Chen Linyao promised herself that.

When they finally landed on the ground, Chen Linyao felt as if the gates of the underworld weren’t far from her reach. Having brushed so close to death once unprepared and again unwillingly, her mental state had undergone a significant transformation.

“You believe me now, don’t you?”

Chen Linyao nodded rapidly.

“Then let’s head back.”

Chen Linyao was still nodding. She then followed the young man out of the forest.

It took them several long minutes, but they eventually made it back to the car. Only after sitting down did a thought strike her.

“Wait!”

Xie Zhengjie turned to her. He felt that this woman was endlessly problematic—how many times did he need to prove himself? Why couldn’t she just believe him?

“What now?”

“You didn’t lose your memory.” Chen Linyao turned, staring at the young man. All this time, she had been at a disadvantage because the doctor thought he had amnesia. But now that she thought about it, there was no reason for her to take care of him anymore.

“I’ve told you that many times. You just wouldn’t believe me.”

“I believe you now, I believe you now.” Chen Linyao responded quickly, steering the conversation toward a new goal: the police station.

“As I said, this man hasn’t actually lost his memory.”

She had taken the young man to the police station to confront the female officer in charge of the case. Officer Lu Yeqing listened while jotting down notes, then turned to look at the man in question.

“Your name is Xie Zhengjie, correct?”

“Hmm.”

“You previously lived in the imperial palace?”

“Yes.”

“Your father is the emperor, and your mother is the empress?”

“While I won’t hold it against you, you should speak more respectfully. Our father, the Crown Prince, is the Emperor, and our mother is the Empress.”

Lu Yeqing stared at him for a moment before turning back to Chen Linyao.

“Little Sister Chen, I understand this is difficult, but you’re still responsible for him.”

His father is the emperor, and his mother is the empress? If Lu Yeqing seriously believed that, she would have been fired long ago.
